Overview
High-Temperature Samarium Cobalt Magnets
- Category: Round, Square, Countersunk, Custom Shapes, Triangular, etc.
- Applications: 3C Digital Devices, Electronics, Industrial Motors, Gifts & Toys, Medical Devices
Samarium cobalt (SmCo) magnets are primarily made from metallic samarium, cobalt, and other metal elements in specific proportions. They are manufactured through high-temperature melting, powdering, pressing, and sintering to produce blanks of various grades. These blanks are then selected based on the required magnetic properties, mechanically processed into the desired shapes, and finally magnetized. Due to their inherent magnetic properties and effects, SmCo magnets provide magnetic fields for motors, magnetic machinery, sensors, microwave devices, and other equipment, enabling the transfer and conversion between magnetic, mechanical, and electrical energy, and achieving precise control functions.
Since SmCo magnets are further mechanically processed, their designs should avoid overly complex shapes and excessively tight dimensional tolerances, as this can significantly increase production costs. Additionally, SmCo magnets are extremely brittle, so machining and assembly factors must be carefully considered to prevent breakage and avoid substantial increases in manufacturing costs.
SmCo Magnet Types
1. 1:5 Samarium Cobalt Magnets (SmCo5)
- Made from samarium and cobalt (or partial praseodymium substitution).
- Maximum energy product: 16–25 MGOe.
- Maximum working temperature: 250°C.
- Better mechanical properties than 2:17 SmCo, easier to machine for thin, small, or complex shapes.
- Magnetization requires ~40,000 Gauss, lower than 2:17 SmCo.
2. 2:17 Samarium Cobalt Magnets (Sm₂Co₁₇)
- Made from samarium, cobalt, copper, iron, and zirconium.
- Maximum energy product: 20–35 MGOe.
- Maximum working temperature: 350°C.
- Excellent corrosion resistance and low temperature coefficient, superior to NdFeB at high temperatures.
- Highly brittle; careful handling required during machining, magnetization, and assembly.
Tips & Best Practices
- Sintered SmCo permanent magnets are highly brittle and lack ductility, so they should not be used as structural components. The mechanical properties of 1:5 SmCo magnets are better than 2:17 SmCo, making them easier to machine, while 2:17 SmCo is more brittle. After magnetization, each magnet must be handled individually and carefully during assembly to avoid contact with ferrous objects or collisions between magnets, which could cause breakage or personal injury.
- Minor chips or surface defects may occur during production, packaging, or transport due to slight collisions. As long as they do not affect assembly or functionality, these imperfections will not compromise the magnet’s performance, stability, or resistance to demagnetization.
- For users requesting unmagnetized SmCo magnets, it is essential to understand the magnetizing energy of your equipment to ensure complete saturation of our products.
- For products designed for use in acidic, alkaline, or harsh environments, we also offer SmCo magnets with optional coatings, including zinc, nickel, gold, or epoxy.
